From Set Point to Stable: Implementing Precision PI Control with Siemens LOGO!
Achieving precise level control in a tank system can be tricky. Overshoot, fluctuations, and constant manual tuning are common headaches.
I built a compact automation solution to solve this, using a Siemens LOGO! PLC and—crucially—the LOGO! Web Editor. Here's a look at the project and why the Web Editor is a game-changer.
🎯 The Objective:
Automate a filling/discharge process with high precision, offering both automatic (PI-controlled) and manual control modes.
⚙️ The Setup:
Actuators: Analog input valve (fill), ON/OFF valve (discharge).
Sensor: Level transmitter for continuous feedback (Process Value - PV).
Brain: Siemens LOGO! 8 PLC.
🧠 The Control Strategy:
Precision is handled by an embedded PI (Proportional-Integral) Controller:
Proportional (P): Reacts to the current error (SP - PV).
Integral (I): Eliminates steady-state error by learning from past errors over time. (Time integration is key! ⏱️)
This ensures the analog valve adjusts smoothly to hit and maintain the exact set point without oscillation.
🖥️ Visualization & Operation:
Using the LOGO! Web Editor, I created an intuitive HMI with:
Control Panel: Switches for Auto/Manual mode. In Manual, operators can directly set the valve percentage.
Trend Page: A real-time trend view graphing three critical values: Set Point (SP), Process Value (PV), and Analog Output (AQ). This is invaluable for tuning and troubleshooting

💡 Why the LOGO! Web Editor Was the Perfect Choice:
This project highlights the power of the LOGO! ecosystem. We didn't need a expensive SCADA system because the Web Editor provides:
Built-in HMI & Visualization: It allows you to create custom web-based dashboards directly on the LOGO! itself. No extra software licenses needed.
Real-Time Trending: The Trend Page was vital for this project, giving me a live graph of Set Point, Process Value, and Analog Output for tuning and validation.
Remote Access: From any phone or computer on the network, I can monitor the process, adjust set points, or switch modes. This is a huge advantage for monitoring and troubleshooting.
Cost-Effectiveness: It packs the functionality of a small PLC + a basic HMI panel into a single, low-cost device.

This project is a great example of using smart, integrated tools to build elegant and effective industrial solutions.
I'm curious: For smaller control applications, do you prefer an all-in-one solution like LOGO! or separate PLC/HMI setups? What's your go-to for simple visualization?
