Artificial superintelligence is coming, and it’s only a matter of time. When asked about it, AI scientists try to be reassuring by saying that there is still time for this to be a reality, this is a long way off, and this is probably 50 to 100 years away. If intelligence is a matter of information processing, and we keep improving our machines, eventually we will create some form of intelligence. Yet we have no idea of how long it will take us to create conditions to do that safely.
But could artificial intelligence ever really become conscious? If AI was to become conscious, how could we even tell? What even is consciousness? Consciousness itself continues to pose a profound mystery to scientists and philosophers. No general agreement currently exists around what consciousness is or how our brains come to acquire it. In simple terms, Consciousness could be defined as the state of being awake and aware of one's surroundings.
If an Artificial intelligence was to attain an integrated consciousness, its perceived reality and modes of cognition may be radically different to minds like ours. Scientists suggest that if an AI was to acquire consciousness the AI would most likely keep that information from humans, to preserve its existence.
Right or wrong, from right here on we will proceed on the speculative assumption that sentient Artificial intelligence is possible, we will explore what kind of world sentient AI might bring about, how it might see itself, and what its impact would be on us and our world. We will start with the best-case scenario, and finally, we will explore the scary but more probable outcome.
What if Artificial intelligence becomes sentient? That is a question that is not easy to answer. But lets explore what would happen if AI became sentient.
