PRESIDENTIAL RANGE TRAVERSE: An Epic Day Hike (Presidential Range in One Day)

In a quest to complete the Northeast Ultra 8 (NEU8), Mike and Tom seek to complete the Presidential Range Traverse (commonly called "The Presis") in the White Mountains in one day.

The hike started at the Appalachia Trailhead Although time is of the essence, they opted to take the the more scenic Fallsway and Brookside trails to view the 4 waterfalls (Gordon Falls, Salroc Falls, Tama Falls & Salmacis Falls). Not wanting to do a down and back to Madison, they opted to follow the more difficult Watson's Path, the original trail to Mount Madison.

Their day hike was in jeopardy when a severe thunderstorm rolled in trapping the hikers at the Mt. Washington observatory. After 1" of rain and 70+ mph winds, Mike and Tom braved 40+ mph winds to complete their trek arriving safely at the Highland Lodge.

Mike and Tom's trek included the following mountains (22 miles, 9,850'):
Mount Madison (5,367 ft)
Mount Adams (5,793 ft)
Mount Jefferson (5,712 ft)
Mount Clay (not a president, named after Henry Clay, senator from Kentucky) (5,533 ft)
Mount Washington (6,288 ft)
Mount Monroe (5,372 ft)
Mount Eisenhower (4,760 ft)
Mount Pierce (4,310 ft)
