This is a GAMING Headset?? LucidSound LS30 Review
There are two kinds of people in the world. Those who wear ugly looking gaming headsets to get an edge, and those who just use earbuds that typically don’t have great mic or sound quality. This is an issue. Every manufacturer of gaming headsets seems to think we are all into the hot mess that is their design language looking like exoskeletons or edgy air traffic controllers. You can’t wear these out in public, they don’t fit that. Aesthetic. You’ll get a few stares. Not because they’re so “cool” but rather, it’s different, it doesn’t blend in well and it looks abnormal. Then comes this. The Lucid Sound LS30 Wireless gaming headset. With a design that screams “Inspired by Beats” instead of “Look at me pro gamer”. This headset looks to be more “fashionable”. But is it good as both a gaming headset and as headphones? Let find out.
The aesthetic design of the Lucid Sound LS30 is simple and looks nice and clean, without the crazy bulky design of other gaming headsets in its price range. It comes with plenty of cables for whatever you’re trying to plug this into. A USB dongle for wireless pairing, an aux cord, optical to plug into the usb dongle, and a TRS aux cable. Oh, can’t forget the sticker. I hear that gives crisper audio. Now back to the headphones, the metallic band feels nice to touch and the leather feels nice and plush with a quilted pattern on the headband for that “premium” feel. If you’re not into the flashy white and gold, there’s a more subdued black and silver option, which looks good too and not EDGY.
The outer rings of the ear cups are actually volume controls with the left ear being audio volume, and the right being chat volume. The lucid sound logos are also mute buttons for audio and chat. Looks aren’t everything and that shows. The headset feels a bit cheap with some strange assembly. On the left earcup there is an LED power indicator, micro usb charging port, aux input, and a port for the detachable mic. The headset doesn’t fold, but the swivel mechanism feels stiff, like it doesn’t want to move at all. My only gripe with its design is the lucidsound lettering on the headband but that’s just personal tastes, some might like that.
So typically, when someone is looking for a gaming headset they are looking for comfort in long gaming sessions, great sound quality for gaming and good mic quality. For audio headphones, comfort isn’t as important but still necessary, mic is optional or nonexistent, and the better sound quality the better the listening experience. There’s some lines of intersection, so let’s start there. Most gaming headsets overemphasize the lows and highs of a headset to help with finding sound effects in games and making them more noticeable. Which in turn make them terrible music headphones because they just weaken the mids too much. The eq button on this pair of headphones allows you to switch between different presets giving you more control, depending on what you’re doing, whether it’s music, gaming, or youtube videos from your favorite channels.
The sound quality on the LS30 is great, everything is clear and crisp and it gives the music depth and switching to gaming only requires a press on the eq button to change modes. Having them on for long periods of time doesn’t really become uncomfortable, but the pressure is noticeable. Another downside is the mic. It doesn’t have a windscreen on it making breathing through your nose hearable and stupidly obnoxious. You don’t need boogers on the mic. That’s nasty. Put a windscreen on it. The last part is the pressure, it places on your head, you’ll notice. It’s not the most comfortable, but it won’t put anywhere near as much pressure as some other headphones with a similar design. Hint. Hint.
So what’s my take on this headset? It’s good. Surprisingly. I mean that in a good way. I went into this with the impression that this would be just a decent product because I’ve never heard of this brand, but they ended up really good. It creates a nice middle ground balance with decent comfort, good sound quality, and a design that would go unnoticed if you wanted to use it for music. Making it perfect for those that need a headset for both instead of buying two different pairs. It retails for $150 and if you really want it, put a windscreen on the mic. Please.
