Welcome back to a new video in the Free CCNA Video Series and in this video, we’ll understand the different types of APIs used in the case of SDN.
When you want any two applications to communicate, you need a API (application Programable Interface). API defines how two applications will exchange data.
Southbound APIs:
A controller is required to communicate with network devices in controller-based network architectures.
In almost every architectural drawing and network design, the network devices are generally kept below the controller.
the Southbound APIs is an interface amid controller and networking devices, given their location is at the bottom of the design.
Northbound APIs:
The controller’s NBI (Northbound Interface) opens the controller so its functions and data can be used by other programs, enabling network programmability, with much quicker development.
With the controller’s APIs, programs can easily fetch the information from the controller. By making use of the controller’s SBIs, NBIs enable programs for using the controller’s capabilities to plan flows into the devices.
NBI actually provide us with automation capabilities. Using the NBI, you can also fetch the information from the controller, edit it, push it back to the controller and you can see the changes on the network devices.
The name SBI (Southbound API) or NBI (Northbound API) is given purely according to the direction.
What is JSON?
In a programming language, JSON or JavaScript Object Notation is a lightweight data-interchange format that is completely language independent. They are basically based on JavaScript language and thus easy to understand and generate.
What is XML?
XML or Extensible Markup Language is designed to carry data as well as not to display data. It is a W3C recommendation that defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. It normally focuses on simplicity, generality and usability across the internet.
