Voxengo Span is a great tool for analyzing the frequencies of your audio tracks and for the entire project.
Today we will see how to best set Voxengo Span for the mix or master in mid-side mode.
Let's analyze the interface:
In this screen we have the control of the frequencies audible by the human ear, which from 20hz (low area, or sub to be clear) to 20kz (high area, example hit hat or ride).
The spectrum is adjustable from this bar.
In this section we have the signal amplitude expressed in db.
These bars instead indicate the output signal expressed in the dbfs scale (Decibels relative to full scale), is a unit of measurement for amplitude levels in digital systems.
Now let's analyze the track in question:
the graph shows the stereo mode, as can also be seen from the phase correlator.
+1 corresponds to Mid, or monophonic signal (phase)
-1 corresponds to the Side, or stereophonic signal (counter-phase)
To analyze both signals we go to the drop-down menu and select the item (Mid-Side Stereo), under the Underlay item we select Side and the counter-phase of the song or track in question will appear.
Now let's improve the visibility of the 2 sources:
go to the Spectrum Mode Editor and de-select Filter Display for both the Mid and the Side
Now let's listen to both signals with the Solo button:
Mid
Side
With the Hold button we stop the analysis.
