In this video I bind our mesh to the skeleton created in Part 2. I also go over how to paint weights using the Paint Skin Weights Tool in Maya. I show some of the settings off and then demonstrate how I usually paint weights quickly for these robots given the rigid and non-cartoony manner in which we represent their forms in motion in Robots Love Ice Cream.

What's been covered before the start of this Rigging series: Unwrapping workflow series (6 parts) -    • Addo Games - Workflow - Unwrapping (6 parts)

About the Rigging series: I'm going to show you how we take a modeled and unwrapped robot in Robots Love Ice Cream and create a skeleton, binding the mesh to the skeleton, and then painting weights on it, and prepare it for full texturing by our artist. At the start of this series, we've already concepted and modeled the robot.

I'd really appreciate your feedback and questions. This should help with the basics of rigging. I have intentionally chosen a simple model and I am not doing any true soft weight painting by the design of both my game and to keep things very simple in this tutorial (hence why it's only three parts).

Note: This is my first attempt at documenting some of the process we have at Addo Games for our creative workflow. We're a small team and we often wear many hats. I'm the main developer and project lead, but I like helping out with the creative pipeline from time to time.
