Free CCNA Training Course | Part 2 - Interfaces
Welcome to the Free CCNA Training Course. This series is for anyone who wants to build on their basic network skills, and even pass the CCNA 200-301 exam.

Switches have plenty of interfaces. After all, that’s their job right? But not all interfaces are the same. We have RJ45 ports (with CAT-6 cable), as well as SFP, SFP+, and QSFP transceivers (often used with fiber). Some cables even have transceivers built in, such as DAC/twinax cables.
It’s important to note that switches are different from hubs, as switches have built in intelligence, which prevents packets from suffering collisions.
But we’re not just concerned with the physical cables. We also need to think about speed and duplex settings. Often this is worked out through autonegotiation, but it can be set manually.
Then we need to consider MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) and frame size. These refer to the maximum packet or frame size allowed through the switch. We can even allow extra large frames called ‘jumbo frames’. If a packet/frame is too large, it needs to be fragmented, which affects performance.
We’ll take a look at some of the errors we might see on a switch, and what they mean. We’ll see what ‘line protocol’ is, and what it means if a port is ‘administratively down’. We’ll also learn terms like giants, runts, CRC, and checksum.
