A monomial is a term that is either a number, a variable, a product and a quotient of a number, and one or more variables.
A monomial, therefore, is an algebraic expression that can be written in the form of:
a number like 2, 1/3, -7
a variable such as x, y, a, b, m
a product and quotient of a number and a variable like 2a, 4x, ¼ y
a product of two or more variables such as ab, XY, mnp
Similar terms in an algebraic expression may be combined into a single term by adding or subtracting their numerical coefficients, as indicated by the signs, keeping the identical literal factors unchanged.
