Silver cigarette case.
A passionate smoker like Thomas Mann needs an appropriate holder for the road.
The German novelist might have acquired a taste for Egyptian cigarettes during a visit to the country on the Nile. He was researching for his “Joseph” novels.
In the late 1940ies, he had it even restored, as he mentions in his diary: "I enjoy the restoration of my old silver cigarette case in Zurich" (2nd July 1947).
