Welcome to Lesson 04 of my DxO PhotoLab 9 Zero to Hero course.

In this lesson, we’re exploring one of the most important concepts in photography and photo editing: the difference between RAW and JPEG files.

If you’re new to photography, understanding RAW files will dramatically improve your editing results and help you get the most from software such as DxO PhotoLab.

A JPEG is a finished image created by your camera.

A RAW file contains the original information captured by the camera sensor, giving you significantly more flexibility when editing exposure, shadows, highlights, colour and white balance.

In this lesson you’ll learn:

• What is a RAW file?
• What is a JPEG file?
• RAW vs JPEG explained simply
• Dynamic range explained
• Recovering highlights and shadows
• Why photographers shoot RAW
• White balance flexibility
• RAW + JPEG workflows
• Why RAW files work best with DxO PhotoLab

Many modern cameras allow you to shoot both RAW and JPEG at the same time, giving you the convenience of a ready-to-use JPEG alongside the flexibility of a RAW file for editing later.

These tutorials are designed to be listened to while you learn photography and DxO PhotoLab at your own pace.

By the end of this lesson, you’ll understand why so many photographers choose RAW and how it can help save images that may not be perfectly exposed straight out of camera.
