"The sports field was across the road from an abattoir and in winter we played rugby on frozen mud, accompanied by the chilling death cries of cows, as they were turned into beef. I was the smallest boy in the class and would be chosen to be the ‘hooker’ in the scrum, this meant that I dangled in the centre with my arms around the shoulders of the taller boys either side of me, unable to protect by face and testicles from icy fists and flailing studded boots. But like school in general, it was something I had no choice but to endure until I was old enough to leave, a moment for which I could not wait. Until then, I was the one staring out of the window or drawing on my desk, mystified by algebra, not only by how to do it, but why would anyone want to?"
