In this talk, we'll analyze and compare current garbage collection algorithms in Java and Go, taking into account their latest updates.

GC implementations in existing runtimes are constantly improving, but understanding and considering the basic principles can significantly impact the performance of application code. We'll briefly review these principles, starting with the simplest marking algorithms.

Next, we'll examine the principles of concurrent garbage collection using various algorithms as examples: G1, ZGC, GreenTea (Go), and others; their properties and impact on latency and throughput.

Finally, we'll discuss why Java and Go made different decisions when designing their garbage collectors and what questions to ask to choose the most appropriate algorithm.
