Prison for birds
Predators are unable to penetrate this nest. Hornbills seek a burrow to lay their eggs and raise their chicks, but this isn't always safe. So the female hides inside, and her partner brings mud in her beak. She uses the mud and begins to seal herself in the nest, protected from predators. She leaves only a tiny hole for feeding. It's a secure fortress, but it feels like a prison. Therefore, she relies heavily on her partner for food. After she lays the eggs, they hatch in six weeks. When the chicks become too large, the mother escapes from the nest.
