Stanley Spencer Legacy:
Sir Stanley Spencer (1891-1959), one of Britain's greatest 20th century painters, was born in Cookham and called it "a village in Heaven." The Stanley Spencer Gallery in the High Street (former Methodist chapel) displays over 120 of his works. His masterpiece "The Resurrection, Cookham" is set in Holy Trinity churchyard. His ashes are buried in the village churchyard.
