QNAP NAS RAID 5 Failed: Two Dead Drives, Software Gave Up, We Did Not
Michael from the Northern Territory sent in four WD Green 2TB drives from his QNAP NAS. The unit kept crashing. He could see folders but could not copy a single file. Critical business data for properties and admin was completely inaccessible.
Two of the four drives had failed. One had bad sectors. One was not detected at all. When Dmitri opened it in our laminar flow cabinet, he found crash dust inside. A confirmed head crash.
We cloned the three working drives using our Atola Insight Forensic. The healthy drives took 10 hours. The bad sector drive took 4 days. Then we tried to reconstruct the RAID array.
UFS Explorer detected the RAID but the file system was damaged. File Scavenger got stuck at 3% after an hour. Both failed.
Payam suspected the RAID metadata had been altered after a previous crash or improper shutdown, which is why no software could reconstruct the array. So he tested every possible disc order and block size combination manually. After several hours he found the right one. All files appeared. Everything was saved to a 10TB external drive and shipped back to Michael at no extra charge.
When the tools give up, experience takes over.
