The latest Linux operating system Ubuntu 17.10 re-brands its look with GNOME shell. Here I show you what is new in this release of Ubuntu Linux operating system.
Ubuntu 17.10, codenamed "Artful Aardvark," was a significant release of the Ubuntu operating system, launched in October 2017. It introduced several notable changes and updates compared to its predecessor, Ubuntu 17.04. One of the most significant changes in Ubuntu 17.10 was the switch from the Unity desktop environment to GNOME Shell as the default desktop environment. This marked the end of the Unity desktop, which had been the default in Ubuntu for several years. With GNOME Shell, Ubuntu returned to using the GNOME desktop environment, providing users with a modern and customizable interface. Ubuntu 17.10 made Wayland the default display server for GNOME sessions. Wayland is a modern display server protocol designed to replace the aging X11 system. Wayland offers improved security, performance, and support for modern graphics hardware. Ubuntu 17.10 introduced a new installer called Ubiquity, which featured a redesigned user interface and streamlined installation process. The new installer aimed to make the installation experience more intuitive and user-friendly. Ubuntu 17.10 shipped with updated versions of various software packages, including the Linux kernel, GNOME desktop environment, LibreOffice, Firefox web browser, and other core system components. These updates provided users with access to the latest features, improvements, and security fixes. With the transition to GNOME Shell, Ubuntu 17.10 replaced the Unity Software Center with the GNOME Software application for managing software installations, updates, and removals. GNOME Software provided a sleek and modern interface for browsing and installing software packages from the Ubuntu repositories. The system requirements for Ubuntu 17.10 were similar to those of previous releases. It could run on a wide range of hardware configurations, including desktops, laptops, and servers, with support for both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures.
