Welcome back to part 33 of my Survival Horror devlog series in Unreal Engine 5.6! Today, we are tackling one of the most crucial core mechanics of any game: the Save and Load System.
In this episode, I’ll show you how to properly serialize data so the game world actually remembers your actions.
What's new in this episode:
💾 The Foundation: Setting up the Game Instance and BP_SaveGame class for persistent data storage.
🎒 Player Serialization: Saving the player's exact Location, Rotation, and complete Inventory arrays (both common and quest items).
📦 Level Persistence: Generating unique IDs for interactable items. The game now remembers if you’ve already looted a medkit or key, preventing it from respawning on load.
🖥️ UI Integration: Wiring up the "New Game" and "Continue" logic in the Main Menu, plus implementing a Quick Save feature.
🎮 Gamepad UI Hack: Sharing a clever workaround using a "dummy widget" to successfully force-hide the mouse cursor when switching to a controller.
Please let me know what you think in the comments! Do you have any advice or alternative approaches to saving data? Your feedback and support keep this project going! 👇
