This Saturday Rub features JB, Garry, Spud and Damo beginning the show with a ripe Spud facing the corner because he can't eyeball whoever he's about to take down, and a sniffly, sickly Garry, who no doubt has been whinging all morning. Jim reckons he was on a drip in the Epworth hospital last night. So begins the story of today. Jim and the boys are herded onto a very, very light Qantas plane about to embark for Launceston, and are sitting there waiting for lift off, until they hear a whisper from the front of the plane and they notice that Garry is not on board. They're all wondering, even Lloydo from the station that no one listens to. Spud is now getting some extra Rub notes ready because he thinks he's going to have to do the performance of two men today. And after the doors shut, and the safety measures begun, out comes a man in high-visible gear ushering the great Lonewolf across the tarmac to the plane, fifteen minutes after the rest of them had boarded. And when he gets on board, he has the nerve to look at the rest of the boys and give them a "cop that!" Listen to Spud doing Tim Lane and Drew Morphett as they worry about their livelihood's being affected by the Wolf's tardiness. So Spud asks why he was late. He finally speaks. His explanation is this: he left Epworth at 1:30am, and made it to the airport at 8. The Doc had actually told him not to fly, but he didn't want to let the boys down. Oh, sure. He went to the airport, and into the Qantas lounge, avoided a waiting Dermott Brereton, and decided the 15 minutes of sleep he had all night due to "fluid on the lungs" was not enough, so he rested his eyes. Next thing he knew, his phone rang, and a woman on the other end he dubs a "real snitchy bitch" asks him where the hell he was. After he rattles off his poor excuse, he then turns the tables onto them and asks just where the hell they were when they should be getting around their mate. Damo reckons Tim Lane really was actually stressing because they like to be there at 10 for a 12 o'clock broadcast. But the truth of it is that they all just wished he missed the flight because it would have given them a month of material on the Wolf that would have gone down a treat. I'm almost sad we won't get that. Amidst a situation that Garry could not defend, he still had the swagger, and the nerve to snatch Damo's copy of the newspaper. Brilliant.
