In this video, I discuss Arthur Lee Burn's "International Theory and Historical Explanation" in the inaugural issue of History and Theory (1960) with Dr Bob Nicholson, Reader in History at Edge Hill University. We discuss the concepts of deterministic and non-deterministic theory and how we have encountered these in our as media historian. We then move onto discuss the role of quantification, sentiment analysis and culturomics in an age of mass digitisation. Finally, we conclude by discussing the ways in which historians conceptualisation their own methodologies for determine influence and cause and effect and how we pass on these conceptualisations to our students.
