Annette Boudreau | Defining linguistic insecurity
Annette Boudreau is Professor Emerita in the Department of French Studies at the University of Moncton. She is the recipient of the 2023 Acfas Gilles-Paquet Prize for Canadian Minority Francophonie. She is the first recipient of this prize, created to mark Acfas's 100th anniversary.
Annette Boudreau has spent her entire career at the University of Moncton. She began by teaching French as a second language before moving into sociolinguistics, her primary research area for the past 30 years.
For nearly fifty years, the laureate has been working to combat preconceived notions about languages and the people who speak them. She analyzes the links between linguistic practices and representations, identity construction, and social structuring in Francophone minority communities in Canada. She is particularly interested in issues related to linguistic insecurity and the resulting feelings of legitimacy/illegitimacy, and their applications in Acadia in the Maritimes.
