The love of Hobbits runs deep, but Tolkien had a lot more to say about community and support than just his words about the halflings. Between the lines runs a fascinating economic structure that might help us untangle just how much we've been taught about how the world has to work. Maybe there's more to our story than what we've been lead to believe. Capitalism isn't the birth of modern technology, it's the cause of an ever lifting ceiling of wealth that leaves the floor well behind. It's what has eaten away at our ability to have community support- but that may be it's true weakness in the end.
