How do I compress a file in Linux?
The gzip command is very simple to use. You just type "gzip" followed by the name of the file you want to compress. Unlike the commands described above, gzip will encrypt the files "in place". In other words, the original file will be replaced by the encrypted file.

Can we compress a tar file?
Tar and Gzip are two of the most common utilities for archiving and compressing files. More specifically, tar is used for archiving and gzip is used for compression, however, the two are most often used in conjunction.

What is the tar command in Linux?
The Linux 'tar' stands for tape archive, and is used to create an Archive and extract the Archive files. tar command in Linux is one of the important commands which provides archiving functionality in Linux. We can use the Linux tar command to create compressed or uncompressed Archive files and also maintain and modify them.
