A 31-year-old female had double eyelid surgery with non-incisional suture method. It's been 2 weeks and 2 days and she thinks her crease is really high. She wants to know if the height of the crease will reduce after a couple of months.
Dr. Amiya Prasad, an oculofacial cosmetic surgeon, explains that swelling is a normal phenomenon when tissues are manipulated or traumatized like in eye rubbing or swelling. Surgery is controlled trauma, so it can happen then. The additional 3mm of the eyelid crease from the preoperative measurement of 7 mm is likely caused by this swelling. However, this may make the patient anxious but he always reassures his patients that nature gives some room for surgeons to work with. For example in the non-incisional procedure, where there is no skin removed, the skin is anchored to the levator muscle. This gives the surgeon permission to create a crease up to a certain level. Unfortunately, some surgeons go beyond that limit which ends up with a crease that is too high or unusual.
With situations like this woman's, Dr. Prasad tells his patients that the crease will settle close to the original position that the surgeon intended it to be after the swelling goes away. He advises his patients to look continuously at themselves, see how things progress and observe how the swelling can change over time. In his practice, he sees his patients within the 1st week to 2 weeks and then in 1 month, 3 months, 6 months. He really follows his patients closely and the door is always open for his patients to call and come in for any concerns.
Dr. Prasad suggests that she simply wait. Sometimes, people measure things very carefully and their perspective starts to change and turn small concerns into big problems. He suggests that she continue communicating with her doctor and she shouldn't try to do something that her doctor is not aware of. It is important to that they work together.
