Do you want a simple way to switch between shore power and your inverter without flipping switches? An Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) does this for you automatically, making it a must-have for camper vans, RVs, and even emergency backup power during blackouts. In this video, I’ll show you how it works, how to wire it, and how to keep your system safe with proper breakers and grounding.

The ATS has two inputs—one for shore power (or the grid) and one for your inverter. It always prioritizes shore power when it’s available, so when you plug in at a campground, it automatically switches over. If you unplug, it seamlessly switches back to your inverter, keeping all your AC outlets powered without manual intervention. I’ll demonstrate this in action, showing automatic switching, and testing whether the transfer time is as fast as advertised.

To ensure safety, I’ll go over the necessary breakers and wire sizes for both 230V and 115V systems, explaining why I added extra breakers since this ATS doesn’t have official certifications. I’ll also cover GFCI protection and grounding, including how to set up a ground-neutral bond so that the GFCI works properly. If you’re using an inverter in your camper, proper grounding is essential for both safety and system reliability.

Lastly, I’ll explain how to charge your batteries using shore power. The simplest way is to plug a battery charger into your AC outlets when on shore power, but I’ll also show why you need to unplug it when running on inverter power to avoid wasting energy.

This device fits on a DIN rail, but it doesn't fit in a standard European distribution box (it's too high for the lid to close). It holds CE and CB certifications (European/international standards), but is not UL or ETL listed for the US market, hence the extra breakers.
