The filmmakers actually had to come up with small rules for Thanos to make it fair. There were a number of small physical rules that Thanos had to follow so that characters would be able to stay in the fight with him. One of those ideas was that Thanos had to close his fist to use a stone, and that was the bare minimum that allowed for a fight to be put up. They also thought it was important to remind viewers what each stone does. So, they wrote it so Thanos uses the stones in the following scenes of him obtaining them.
