Filmed in Galicia, Spain in an area known as the 'Costa da Morte' where the skill of bobbin lacemakers is world famous! This lovely artesana in the foreground started to learn lacemaking when she was 3 or 4 years old and you can see her skill and dexterity on display. The ladies sitting next to her also started learning when they were 4-5 years old!
It's important to note that bobbin lace making isn't a race. Everyone works at their own pace. Lacemakers used to be paid by the centimeter (and still are in some cases), so working quickly became imperative to help earn more money for the family.
This intricate craft is often handed down from generation to generation, but there are also local classes available. Most concellos (local municipalities) in our area of Galicia offer bobbin lace classes as part of the yearly community education docket. There are also private tutors and regular lacemaker gatherings where you can go and watch (and listen to!) lace being made by hand by hundreds of people all at once and admire this living craft.
