The Cupra Born is Cupra’s first fully electric vehicle, signaling a bold step into the EV era for the Spanish performance brand. Originally revealed as the SEAT el-Born concept at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, the car was later rebranded under the Cupra name to emphasize its sporty DNA. The production model debuted in May 2021, and by September 2021, manufacturing began at Volkswagen’s Zwickau plant in Germany. Built on the VW Group’s MEB platform, the Born shares its foundation with the VW ID.3, but distinguishes itself through aggressive design, sharper handling, and performance-focused tuning.
The Cupra Born lineup initially included several variants:
• 150 kW (204 hp) with a 58 kWh battery: offering a good balance of performance and range (up to ~426 km WLTP).
• e-Boost version (170 kW / 231 hp): the same battery size but with short bursts of extra power, reducing the 0–100 km/h time to 6.6 seconds.
• A 45 kWh entry-level battery model and a 77 kWh long-range version (also available with e-Boost) were also part of the mix, catering to different user needs from urban driving to longer commutes.
As the model matured, Cupra introduced higher-performance trims and limited editions that continued to build on its sporty image.
In 2024, Cupra launched the Born VZ, the most powerful variant to date. “VZ” stands for Veloz, meaning “fast” in Spanish, and this version lived up to the name with:
• 240 kW (326 hp) dual-motor e-Boost powertrain
• A larger 79 kWh battery
• 0–100 km/h in 5.6 seconds
• A range of up to 599 km WLTP
• Exclusive design elements like 20” Aero wheels, CUP Bucket seats, and a larger 12.9-inch touchscreen
With each update, the Cupra Born has evolved to meet rising demands for sporty EVs that don’t compromise on range or practicality. By 2025, the Born lineup reflects a well-rounded offering of electric hatchbacks that balance everyday usability, sustainability, and high performance — making it a standout in the compact EV segment.
