00 Spies were a rock ‘n’ roll band from Austin TX 2000-2005. They produced a great mix of garage punk ‘n’ roll propelled by the drivin’ rhythm & beat of Katy and Carlos and the bloozy twin guitar attack of Darren and Jason, who also took turns on the mic.
On March 9, 2022, Mr. Thrasher left the building. He was 47. Jason had a bigger than life personality and was a sweetheart of a guy. His bear hugs were infamous.
This video is a tribute to him as it is mostly photos of him playing with 00 Spies, as well as other bands he played in, including The Cavemen, The Lo-Fives, and The Hoodrats. 00 Spies appeared on the 2004 comp Shakin’ In My Boots (Licorice Tree), but most of their recordings never had a proper release. “Lookin’ Like A Jerk”, which was recorded at the legendary Sweatbox Studios by Bryan Nelson, was one of several fantastic compositions by Jason, and my favorite. Not just my favorite Thrasher tune, but my favorite 00 Spies song, period. On the track Darren’s fuzzed-up fills compliment Jason’s howl before Thrasher throws down his own trash-slop solo. It was one of those songs that the first time I heard it, I said “That’s a hit!” I always thought it should have been put out on a 7”. Maybe someday all their recordings can be released.

Update:
On July 28, 2022, Carlos Johnson passed away. He had been fighting cancer since the Fall of 2021. His appearance at Jason’s memorial was so inspiring. Carlos was an amazing person, and it just makes watching this video all the more emotional for me. Life is crazy. It’s hard to believe that these two men, friends and bandmates are gone. Never to be forgotten.
