My Costco Surveillance DVR shows HDD Error messages and started beeping. After opening the device, i notice the fan not running at all, but it starts up when one touches it.
No question, the fan is not working and the CPU gets too hot.
Could that cause a HDD error? Maybe the data being written is inconsistent, and that causes errors, because the overheated CPU is unable to calculate checksums correctly? Who knows?
I removed the broken fan, replaced it with an old fan from an used HDD enclosure, and then i formatted the internal Seagate 4TB HDD.
Now i have to wait a few days to see, if i get the same error message again. Right now it is running for 3 hours without any issues. Maybe this really solved the problem.
Anyway, you can see here that it is possible to change the CPU fan relatively easy.
