The ocean sunfish (Mola mola) is often perceived as "useless" and primitive, but from a scientific perspective, this perception is oversimplified and largely misleading. It is one of the largest bony fishes, inhabiting warm and temperate waters of the world's oceans, and its unusual appearance is the result of specialized evolutionary adaptation.
The ocean sunfish's body is strongly flattened laterally and is virtually devoid of a classic caudal fin. Instead, it has a clavus—a dense structure that provides stability during movement. Primary locomotion is achieved through the synchronized movements of the dorsal and anal fins. Despite limited maneuverability, this strategy allows the fish to conserve energy during prolonged drifting through the water column.
The ocean sunfish's diet consists primarily of jellyfish, zooplankton, and other soft-bodied organisms. Although such food has a low energy value, the fish compensates for this by consuming large quantities. Periodic surfacing is associated with thermoregulation after deep dives, as well as parasite removal.
Interaction with predators does pose a certain threat to the ocean's predators due to its slow movement. However, its large size, thick skin, and passive behavioral strategy reduce the likelihood of a successful attack. Furthermore, the ocean sunfish plays an important role in the ecosystem, regulating jellyfish populations and contributing to ocean food chains.
Therefore, despite common myths, the ocean sunfish is not "useless." It is a unique example of a highly specialized adaptation to life in the open ocean.
