📖 Story Synopsis:
“Let’s get a divorce. I’ve been with you for twelve years—that’s enough.”
“Ivan is back. You know he’s my true love.”
I looked up at Jenny. When she said those two sentences, her tone didn’t even waver.
“Have you thought this through?” I asked.
“Very clearly.” She nodded. “I don’t want to live like this anymore.”
“Live like this?” I let out a small laugh. “You mean… with me?”
She frowned slightly. “Don’t twist it. I just think… we’re not compatible.”
I stared into her eyes.
“Then what do these twelve years count for?”
She avoided my gaze. “That was the past.”
I put down my knife and fork.
“So now that he’s back, you’re leaving?”
This time, she didn’t deny it.
“Yes.”
The air turned cold in an instant.
She seemed to be waiting for me to get angry, waiting for me to question her, even waiting for me to say something like stay.
But I only nodded.
“Alright.”
She froze.
“What did you say?”
I wiped the corner of my mouth, my tone steady.
“I said, alright.”
Her expression began to change.
“You’re not going to try to make me stay?”
I looked at her.
“You’ve already decided. Would it matter if I tried?”
Her fingers tightened slightly.
I stood up and glanced at the time.
“The Civil Affairs Bureau hasn’t closed yet. Should we go now?”
She jerked her head up.
For the first time, the emotions in her eyes faltered.
