On August 2, China’s "Sci-Tech Innovation Board Daily" reported the piloting of online permits and IDs on platforms like WeChat, Taobao, and Xiaohongshu. This initiative by the Ministry of Public Security and the Cyberspace Administration has sparked widespread debate. Professor Lao Dongyan from Tsinghua University has been a vocal critic, arguing that the system increases surveillance under the guise of protecting personal information. She highlights that it transforms criminal investigative measures into everyday monitoring for all citizens, lacks legal legitimacy, and threatens personal freedoms. Her concerns were widely discussed online before being censored. This development marks a significant step in China's internet authoritarianism, echoing the dystopian control described in "1984."
