The ancient Japanese had many burial practices that give us insight into their lives. The Jomon did pit burials and jar burials. They also employed mass pit cemeteries to bury large amounts of bodies.
When the Yayoi arrived, we started seeing large grave sites, probably because of their population boom. Remember, the Yayoi became extremely successful due to agriculture.
The Yayoi Japanese also did pit burials and jar burials. They clearly borrowed the jar burial idea from the Jomon. The Yayoi also did secondary burials.
The Yayoi eventually created larger and larger burial mounds. This idea came from the mainland, because we see burial mounds also used in the Korean Peninsula.
