Hi, my name is Sarah Miller in Section 1 of Dr. De Walt's Introduction to Diversity for Educators Class. To me, the word diversity means different ways of life within one world or one community. 5 words I associate with diversity are different, unique, culture, variety, and mixed. My favorite of these words is variety because it shows that people do not have to have the same boring qualities; that they can be different and vary and still be accepted. From the 5 words I have chosen, in order of my importance of my ability to teach, I would chose culture, variety, unique, different, and mixed. As a future educator, to understand diversity is very important. Not every student is going to be brought up the same way I was or how I think they should have been raised. I believe diversity in a classroom teaches students as well as myself, the different viewpoints of life. Diversity can show you how blessed you really are and expose you to different cultures. I expect this course to be difficult. I will need to put time and effort into the activities to really understand diversity and to better my education profession.
