The Middle Urals are beautiful: low mountains covered with dense coniferous forest stretch to the horizon, here and there the windows of lakes turn blue, the valleys of small rivers sparkle with bright green. In one of these valleys lies the Polevsky plant. This is where Pavel Bazhov spent his childhood. Passionately in love with his native land, Bazhov walked the length and breadth of the Urals. With a hunting rifle over his shoulder, he would climb into the most remote corners, visit forgotten mines and, wherever he went, tirelessly write down folk proverbs, fables, legends... Particularly memorable for the writer was a meeting with the old worker Vasily Alekseevich Khmelinin. This eighty-year-old man knew a great many fairy tales and anecdotes. Khmelinin became the prototype of the hero of Bazhov's tales - Grandfather Slyshko, on whose behalf the writer invariably tells the story. Grandfather Slyshko received his name for his love of the word "hear", "hear-ko".
