Welcome to Excel in a Minute!
Introduction
Have you been wondering why Excel has more than one lookup function? Why are there several lookup functions when their purpose is the same?
In terms of functionality, these functions are unique from each other.
In this video, we will give you a quick introduction to these four lookup functions in Excel.
“LOOKUP Function”
The Lookup function in Excel performs an approximate match lookup in a column or row range. It Then returns a corresponding value from another column or row range.
This function runs on three arguments where only the first two are required. The syntax starts with the lookup value, then the lookup vector, and the result vector.
If you choose to omit the result vector argument, the function will return the matched value from the lookup vector.
“HLOOKUP Function”
The H Lookup function performs a horizontal lookup.
It searches for a lookup value from the first row of the table array. Then returns a corresponding value from another row.
This function runs on four arguments where only the first three are required. The syntax starts with the lookup value, then the table array, the row index number, and the range lookup.
The last argument prompts Excel to find the exact match or the approximate match. And since this is optional, the default match mode is approximate match.
“VLOOKUP Function”
The V lookup function works identically as the H lookup function. Their only difference is their lookup orientation.
The V in V lookup stands for vertical, which means it performs a vertical lookup.
It searches for a lookup value from the first column of the table array. Then returns a corresponding value from another column.
This function also runs on four arguments where only the first three are required.
V lookup’s arguments work the same as the H lookup’s arguments, but instead of rows, the V lookup uses columns.
: “XLOOKUP Function”
The X lookup function is the most advanced lookup function in Excel. It can perform either vertical or horizontal lookup.
This runs on six arguments where the first three are required and the other three are optional.
This function allows users to set a value when no match is found using its fourth argument.
Also, it allows users to perform a wildcard match through the match mode argument. Aside from that, the search mode argument allows users to choose which way should the function start searching.
