Of all the iconic melodies Ennio Morricone created throughout his incredible career, the theme from Once Upon a Time in America stands out to me as one of the most poignant, honest themes ever written.
With his recent passing, I found myself thinking about this music and what it represents. A bittersweet, reflective theme for a story told in flashbacks. The final collaboration between Morricone and Sergio Leone, a partnership that defined the Western genre and was cut short by Leone's own passing. A slow-burning score that was unfortunately overlooked in the history of American cinema, but that I wanted to remember today.
