Interactive web applications have demanding scalability, performance, and flexibility requirements that frequently go beyond what traditional relational database technology can provide. Many developers have found they can solve these issues with NoSQL database technology. In this presentation, Frank Weigel will discuss various considerations for transitioning from structured data to a schema-less (document-oriented) model, including some rules of thumb for document-oriented development. He will also share the real-word case study of Tribal Crossing, a social gaming company that needed to get away from the complexity of sharding their MySQL database so migrated to a NoSQL approach.

Frank Weigel is director of product management at Couchbase. He is responsible for the company's core NoSQL database products, and works with customers and users around the world to understand emerging requirements for low-latency, scalable data stores. He started his career 10 years ago in software engineering, primarily focused on dynamic binary translators, before crossing to the dark side and telling others what their code should do.
