Residents groups all over Dublin are resisting plans for large-scale housing. But developers say that the increased height and housing density involved is part of government policy.

There are currently 18 applications before An Bord Pleanála for nearly 5,000 housing units in Dublin.

They are made under the Strategic Housing Development scheme which involves large-scale developments going straight to the board and bypassing local authorities.

This coupled with revised planning policies allowing greater density and height and an emphasis on so-called brownfield sites in urban areas has meant a new scale of housing to which many Dublin residents are not accustomed.
