Only History: Captain Bakhchivandzhi
On February 20th, Grigory Bakhchivandzhi's birthday, I'd like to tell the story of this pilot's journey in his relatively short life. His journey from a village orphan to the first man in our country to fly a jet aircraft.
Grigory Yakovlevich Bakhchivandzhi was appointed to the Air Force Research Institute in 1935, straight from flight school. The fact that he was sent straight to the research institute for test work speaks for itself. Bakhchivandzhi never turned down any assignment and carried out each one flawlessly. His opinions on aircraft and engines were always highly qualified. In combat, Bakhchivandzhi proved himself a courageous aerial fighter. He fought until August 10, 1941, and in a relatively short time, he fought in dozens of air battles with the enemy, shot down several enemy aircraft, and rose to the rank of squadron commander. It was Bakhchivandzhi who was tasked with testing the first Soviet jet aircraft, flights on which, as everyone now knows, marked the birth of Soviet jet aviation and were, in essence, the first step on the path to space.
