In this math video we will demonstrate an understanding of functions & the vertical line test by solving a standardized math test question. This is a two part question. This first part will present us with four graphs and we will perform the vertical line test to determine which two graphs are functions that represent y as a function of x. We will review that the vertical line test fails in our pencil passed left to right vertically ever passes through two or more points on the graph at the same time. The second part of the question will ask us to identify a value to complete a table of a relation so that the relation would NOT be a function. We will review that a function is a relation in which each input has exactly one unique output. I will model and explain two possible values that would complete the table such that the relation is not a function by using an input more than once. An exemplar solution is modeled and explained.

Functions
8.F.A.1 Understand that a function is a rule that assigns to each input exactly one output. The graph of a function is the set of ordered pairs consisting of an input and the corresponding output.

8.F.A.1 Determine which graphs represent functions, and find the missing x-value in a table of (x, y) values that would show that y is not a function of x.
