Right in Africa, there's a land that belongs to no one. It's a small area between Egypt and Sudan. It's called Bir Tawil. And neither country wants to claim it. The thing is, when Great Britain controlled this territory, it drew first the first border, then the second, between the two countries. After Egypt and Sudan became independent, they couldn't agree on which border was the true one—because both wanted a different piece of land, closer to the sea. Egypt believes the first border, which gives them the land by the sea, is the correct one, but Bir Tawil is part of Sudan. Sudan, meanwhile, believes the second border is the correct one—which gives them the land by the sea, but Bir Tawil is part of Egypt. Therefore, recognizing Bir Tawil as their territory would mean giving up their claims to the more attractive piece of land.
