We are running out of teachers
In this video, we discuss teacher training in Germany and why it urgently needs reform. With an acute teacher shortage and a growing number of inadequately prepared teachers, our education system faces major challenges. We share our personal experiences from our teacher training studies and highlight the fundamental flaws in the system.
Why are there so many problems in teacher training? From the focus on subject matter rather than pedagogy to impractical curricula in bachelor's programs and late practical phases in master's programs – we identify the three biggest problems in teacher training and explain why they negatively impact the entire school system in Germany.
Can the teacher shortage be resolved through current measures? We examine the measures of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK) and explain why increasing the number of university places and introducing teachers with bachelor's degrees will not solve the problem. Instead, a fundamental reform of teacher training is needed, one that prioritizes quality and practical relevance.
What does the future hold? Even though the current situation is worrying, there is hope – for example, through private educational offerings and digital learning platforms. But to strengthen the education system in the long term, a comprehensive overhaul of teacher training is necessary.
