How to Recover Deleted Instagram Messages
Did you accidentally delete your Instagram messages and want them back? In this video, we walk you through a method that can help you recover your messages using Instagram’s data download feature. While you can’t directly restore chats back into the app, you can still access your message history through an exported file.
First, open the Instagram app and go to your profile. Tap the three-line menu in the top right corner, then head to “Accounts Center.” From there, tap on “Your information and permissions,” and select “Download your information.”
Next, tap on “Create export” and choose “Export to device.” When customizing your data, deselect everything except “Messages.” This ensures that only your chat history is included in the download. After that, tap “Start export.”
Once the process is complete, Instagram will generate a file (usually in JSON or HTML format) containing your messages. You can open this file on your device to view your deleted conversations.
Keep in mind: this method only works if the messages were stored in your account data before deletion—it won’t recover messages that were never saved or already removed from Instagram’s servers.
