A film about the difficult, adventure-filled life of Russian biologist Sergei Chakhotin.
Chakhotin's friend Albert Einstein believed that Chakhotin was the first to penetrate the atom of life, i.e., the living cell, without splitting it. He was, on the one hand, a student of Röntgen, on the other, a student and friend of Pavlov. At the intersection of physics and biology, the outstanding biophysicist was the first to use focused ultraviolet rays to influence cells, developing a whole series of methods and instruments for performing operations on microscopic objects.
From biological research, he moved on to the study of social phenomena. Fascist marches, Soviet parades—Chakhotin observed them with the eyes of a scientist. He had long been fascinated by mass behavior—the crowd effect, the combination of conditioned and instilled reflexes, and automatism.
He had several wives and many children. Those who ended up in the USSR were sent to Stalin's camps, where many perished. In this film, his youngest son, Pyotr Chakhotin, now living in Italy, recounts his father's fate.
