A stepfather confessed to murdering his stepdaughter, even though he didn't kill her. This was all so the state could reopen the investigation and conduct new DNA testing, unavailable 30 years ago. The 1995 murder of 15-year-old Nicole van den Hurk in the Netherlands remained unsolved. The case was essentially closed and consigned to the archives. But at some point, her own stepfather exploded the situation by confessing to the crime. He hoped his testimony would force authorities to exhume her remains for modern DNA testing. And so it happened. The stepfather's innocence was proven, but Nicole's remains were found to contain the genetic trace of another man, who was identified and convicted of the murder.
