You’ve probably heard that email open rates are falling, and it’s true. A recent Statista survey found that in the U.S., average email open rates among adult internet users dropped from 26% in 2016 to just 18% in 2018. That’s a significant decline that indicates the problem isn’t going away anytime soon. But with so many emails being opened less frequently, how can you make sure yours stands out? As a blogger or marketer, your audience is likely segmented into several different lists based on their interests and preferences. Whether you have one big list or several smaller ones doesn’t matter as much as making sure each one of them sees your email. Here are five ways to increase your email open rates:
Make your subject line count
You might think that the content of your email is more important than the subject line, but you’d be wrong. The best headlines are those that pique your readers’ interests and make them want to open your email. The key to writing a great subject line is being relevant — or as we like to say, context-driven. Your subject line should be relevant to your audience, but it also needs to be specific enough to make it easy for them to know what to expect from the email. If you’re sending a product announcement to your entire list, try to add some context by including the name of the product, where it’s available and how much it costs. If you’re sending an announcement about a special event, you should include the date and the location.
Don’t forget the basics when it comes to good email practices
Even though the internet is changing and evolving, some things never change. Good email practices are still good email practices, and they can help you increase your open rates. With a little adaptability, they can also help make sure your emails look good no matter what email client your subscribers are using. - Short and sweet: Keep the length of your emails between 20 and 30 lines. That’s about the limit for most people’s attention spans. You can still get your point across in a few lines if you use bullet points. - Choose your words carefully. Be consistent in how you address your subscribers. If you normally call them “Dear Reader,” don’t suddenly start addressing them as “Dear Subscriber.” - Make it easy to unsubscribe. Include an “unsubscribe” link at the bottom of your emails. You do not want someone who is not interested in your emails to be stuck with them. - Keep your emails out of spam filters. If you use words like “Buy,” “Sale,” “Discount” or “Expiring” in your emails, you are much more likely to get stuck in a spam filter. You can also increase your open rates by avoiding questionable email practices.
