In this set, you'll receive 5 plastic mini drain cleaning tools and 1 metal clog remover. The plastic drain cleaner is a simple tool. It’s basically a long plastic strip with tiny hooked teeth on it spaced every ½” along its length. It measures 19” when unrolled with an insertable length of about 18". The idea is that if you have a clog in your sink drain, you can insert this tool which will pass through a clog of hair and the hooks will pull the mass out when you pull the tool out of the drain by the handle ring. For tougher clogs that might be a little deeper, or that you can't catch using the plastic tool, try the metal tool which measures 24" with an insertable length of about 20". The metal tool is a bit more durable but only grabs debris at the very tip. Hold the top of plunger as you would a syringe and depress the button with your thumb. When you do this, a metal claw extends from the bottom of the tool and when you release the plunger, it'll grab onto what's directly in front of it.
I was able to unclog a severely backup bathroom sink using the plastic drain dleaner. Because this sink does not have a stopper, it oftentimes gets clogged up with hair and debris. It pulled out a huge hairball that was causing the sink to fill with water from the slowly draining clog. After the clog was removed, the water in the sink drained normally. I also used the metal tool on a smaller clog. This one's operation is a bit different is more effective at grabbing onto smaller or solid masses. However, it was just as effective at removing a clog in my sink. It's also more durable and can be used multiple times, while the plastic ones have a greater chance of getting damaged (teeth breaking off) and are harder to clean. They also can't grip solid masses in the pipe and must pass through a tangled mass of fibers in order to be effective.
Overall, both the plastic and metal clog removers did a nice job with clearing out clogs. An extra benefit to the metal one would be if you need to retrieve something larger like a ring that might have fallen in the drain and gotten stuck in the pipe or caught in the p-trap; you might be able to grab it with the claw to fish it out.
