There is a hole in the universe.
Not a black hole. Not a gap in a catalogue.
An actual hole — a billion light years across —
containing almost no galaxies, no stars,
no structure of any kind.
And nobody can fully explain why it is there.
It is called the Boötes Void. Discovered in
1981 by astronomer Robert Kirshner and his team,
it is a spherical region of space so empty and
so vast that if our galaxy were located inside
it, we would have had almost no evidence that
other galaxies existed at all until very recently
in human history.
The universe is supposed to have voids. The
standard model of cosmology predicts them —
regions where matter has been drawn away by
gravity over billions of years, leaving behind
bubbles of near-empty space surrounded by the
filaments and clusters of the cosmic web. These
voids are expected. They have been measured.
They fit the models.
The Boötes Void does not fit the models.
The largest voids that standard cosmological
simulations produce are three to four hundred
million light years across — at most. The Boötes
Void is one billion light years across. Roughly
two to three times larger than anything the
mathematics of structure formation comfortably
predicts. An anomaly so extreme that forty years
of scientific investigation have not produced a
consensus explanation for why it exists.
In this documentary we go through everything.
The discovery and what the data showed. Why
a void this size sits in tension with our best
model of how the universe formed. Every serious
explanation that has been proposed — unusual
initial conditions, void merging, dark energy
effects — and why each one runs into problems.
What it would look and feel like to exist inside
the void. And what the next generation of cosmic
surveys might finally reveal about the billion
light year hole that should not be there.
At TheCosmicDepth we explore the space concepts,
